Why Every Local Business Needs SEO
If you are a small, medium or large business owner with a local business then you must know about SEO or search engine optimization. If you are not aware of this then you may want to start learning about it. I’ll put our intro to SEO videos on the bottom of this blog. Now, while SEO may not technically help “every” local business out there, it can definitely help a large majority of them. Just to name a few industries off the top of my head, here are the companies that can benefit from local SEO:
- Private Practices
- Home Improvement Companies
- Financial Advisors
The list can go on for quite some time. The point is, if you have a local business and provide goods or services to your local area, then you can use SEO to compete with the big companies around you.
How does Local SEO work?
If you are a home improvement contractor you may be familiar with Home Advisor. If you are a lawyer, you are probably aware of Avvo. How do these companies get leads? It’s through SEO.
When someone goes online and searches for “lawyer in Dallas” or “plumber is Miami” the first thing they see are paid results.
While these types of ads are useful, they can also be very costly. You can easily burn through $2,000+ a month and the day you stop advertising, your traffic and leads stop as well.
Underneath the paid advertisements you’ll start seeing how SEO can help. All companies should set up a Google My Business account. By doing this, you can start getting immediate exposure without spending a dime.
Once you set up Google My Business and set up your profile the right way, you’ll star showing up on Google Maps. These listings are right underneath the paid ads.
Google My Business is very important for proper SEO. It helps Google see that your website or business is located in the area you are trying to serve and helps your website rank higher in organic search as well.
What is organic search?
Organic search results are the ones that show up underneath the map listings on Google. These companies that rank on the first page tend to be larger, more established companies that have been around for quite some time. Google will not put up a new business on page 1 of Google. Why should they? What has that new company proved? Nothing.
We can help you build your online reputation so that your business shows up on Google Maps as well as organic results.
Once you start showing up on Google Maps as well as Organic results, then you will start getting a lot of “natural” traffic. You will not have to “pay per click” on these types of long lasting results. So, instead of paying $2,000 a month for temporary leads, you can invest in a long term SEO plan which will eventually reduce your cost per lead drastically.
How do you gain local rankings?
There are a lot of things you need to do to ensure you’re SEO is going well. We’ll start with the basics.
- Fix your NAP (name, address and phone number).
- Make sure that anytime you share your company information, your NAP is correct.
- Your NAP should match what your Google My Business listing says.
- Also, here are other things you’ll need to do to gain rankings:
- Make sure your website is optimized.
- Build out citations like: Yext, Yelp, Manta, Yellow Pages etcc.
- Build out social profiles: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Instagram
- Provide useful content/information on your website.
SEO can be quite complicated but if you learn the basics as a small business owner, you can hire a company or consultant and ensure you are getting what you are paying for. Just because you know SEO doesn’t mean you need to do it yourself. However, SEO like any other investment requires time and research. You would not invest in a stock without researching the basics of stocks. The same way, you do not want to hire an SEO company if you don’t know how SEO works.
